There’s been a lot of noise about the "SAVE Act" lately. To clear the air: that federal bill (which would have mandated strict citizenship proof for federal elections nationwide) did NOT pass the U.S. Senate.

But here in California, we have a major development closer to home. The California Voter Identification and Voter List Maintenance Requirements Initiative has qualified for the November 3, 2026, ballot.

What does this mean for us?
If this measure passes in November, it would amend the California Constitution to:
✅ Require government-issued photo ID for in-person voting (or the last 4 digits of a government ID for mail-in ballots).

✅ Mandate that the state and county election officials verify citizenship attestations using government databases.

✅ Require ongoing maintenance of voter rolls to verify citizenship status.
Proponents say this is about election integrity and security. Opponents argue it creates unnecessary barriers to the ballot box for eligible voters.

We have until November to track the campaigns, read the official ballot guide, and make our own informed decisions. I’ll be keeping tabs on this—stay tuned.
