PSA! Flowers to avoid if you have furbabies
This post may be a shock for some or many of you. The reality is that many flowers that we love & bring into our homes are unsafe for our pets. Since many of us are ready for & preparing for spring & those beautiful blooms, I wanted to send this out to you in time.
In this blog post, I will provide you with some essential details on certain flowers that I have made the mistake of bringing into our home. I am focusing mainly on flowers & their toxicity to pets. So, like anything, please do your own research. This post is more of an eye-opener & for you to do your research when deciding on flowers that you are planning on bringing into your home.
A huge part of being a decor stylist is bringing in flowers for every season. They're beautiful, so why not have a fresh bouquet at your dining table? I did many times, A mix of flowers & even a huge 7ft eucalyptus garland last year for months. I have done my research on green plants, but since I have the world's brownest thumb, I stopped buying indoor plants & for that matter, outdoor plants too. I did come across many green plants that are harmful to our pets. Since I have no experience or proper knowledge, I won't chat about greens.
Why & when I started doing my research on flowers, mainly because of Pepper. We have two pets here at CCH, or like I refer to them, my "toddlers" Noodle; our cat is pretty healthy; she is four years old, maybe? But Pepper is 11 years old & has allergies & breathing issues due to his trachea collapse. I noticed his allergies when I would bring in branches in the springtime with fresh blooms, he would start sneezing & his eyes would tear up. I stopped with the branches, but I still would bring in my flowers from the market. I never did any research on any of the flowers that I brought in but would notice he would sneeze a bit. I would then give him an allergy pill & call it good. As time went on & his trachea became worse, I started researching everything that would irritate it. In Pepper's case, flowers didn't cause his trachea to collapse but irritated his allergies which then causes his trachea to flare up. Once I started to type in flowers online, really simple "Are peonies toxic to pets?"
I only searched the flowers that I commonly used & I can tell you Chamomile was the only safest one. How scary was that to read! Again, I don't want to alarm you, but please do your research. I'll list the names of the toxic flowers. The sites that I like to do my research on are Berkely Humane & the ASPCA; both have great information. The ASPCA has an entire list of toxic & non-toxic plants that you can review for yourself. It's straightforward to search for any flower or plant. Both sites include pictures, too, just in case you don't know the flower's name. I'll add the Link here to the search.

Is the list shocking, huh? Of course, each flower is different in what it does to a pet & how it is toxic. It can be by digestion or even by their oils. I am no expert. I wanted to know what I was bringing into my home & did my research & was surprised by the results.
If you caught my post on how I reorganized my flower collection last week, you probably saw that I have a pretty extensive collection. I have always loved artificial flowers vs. real ones due to the cost. But after doing my research, I will be growing my collection. I plan to have a small collection per season available over in the shop, but I am going to offer them as "Pre Order" only. I plan to have those available very soon. I will send out a blog post & mention it on Instagram in my stories so you can order if you like. Since the flowers will only be available as "Pre Order," I will have them up in the shop for a limited time, just a few days to submit group orders. A good time to shop at your local stores is after each season. Most stores will mark down their floral section up to 80% OFF. Like in everything, even though the season has passed & you're not "needing" the item, always plan for next season.
I can go forever about what I now do to keep Country Chic Homes as clean as possible for Pepper, Noodle & our newest baby Turtle (cat), but that might be for another post. But what I know now is that they are tiny little creatures that are super sensitive & it is my duty as their parent to keep them as safe as possible.
